CUTTY SARK
MODEL

Cutty Sark is
one of the last tea clippers built and the fastest. She spent
a few years on the tea trade before turning to the
trade in wool from Australia, where she held the record
time to Britain for ten years. In 1883, Cutty Sark was
under command of Captain W. Moore, carrying a cargo of
wool from Newcastle, Australia to England in a splendid
time of 79 days. Her last voyage
to Australia was in 1895.
Continuing
improvements in steam technology early in the 1880s
forced the Cutty Sark to be sold in 1895. She continued as a
cargo ship until purchased in 1922 by retired sea
captain Wilfred Dowman, who used her as a training ship. After his death,
the ship was donated to the Thames Nautical Training
College in 1938 where she became an auxiliary cadet
training ship. In 1954, she was transferred to
permanent dry dock at Greenwich, London for museum
display.
Cutty Sark
is listed by National Historic Ships as part of the
National Historic Fleet. She is one of only three
remaining intact composite construction (wooden hull on
an iron frame) ships from the nineteenth century.
